Our cats sleep all over the house at night. They each have their favorite spot to crash at bedtime. Sometimes it’s the couch, other times it’s a chair, or the stairs, a scratch post, well, you get the idea.

Suffice to say, all four of our cats rarely sleep together in the same spot. It just doesn’t happen very often.

Last night was one of those rare moments when the entire Band picked the same spot to sleep! Of course the spot they choose was our big green couch.

I was lucky enough to witness this rare phenomenon and took a few pictures for all to see. I think we’ll see another Lunar Eclipse before this happens again.

The two cats in question are none other than Dax and Jasmine. Both of these cats are fine on their own but when they get together they usually have something to argue about. It’s hard to know what will happen when they get together.

This time I was caught right in the middle of another impending conflict. Not a good spot to be in with these unpredictable two. (I’m actually glad Jade wasn’t a part of this.) Anyway, there I was as Jasmine approached from the family room and Dax was on his way up the stairs. They were headed right for each other!

I was poised and ready with my camera and was tempted to say something like “Look out Dax” or “Jasmine, incoming at 9 o’clock!” But I didn’t say a word, stood my ground and watched to see what would happen.

I was surprised at what came next.

Here comes Jasmine innocently approaching from the family room and headed right for Dax.

As everyone knows scratch posts are ‘a gotta-have item’ for any cat owner. They’re essential for satisfying your cats need to scratch. They also keep your furniture from getting ripped to pieces.

We built 3 of our own scratch posts for the Band of Cats because we felt something more ‘significant’ was needed. We looked high and low for a scratch post and just couldn’t find any that were big enough.

We built them nice and tall to give the cats a good stretch while they scratch. We’ll show you how we made ours in a future post if you’re interested and plan to make one of your own someday.

All the cats use and love them everyday, but Dax really goes to town on them when he’s in a scratching mood. We call him our Scratch Post Ninja. He really digs into the heavy duty nylon rope and you can hear him scratching all over the house.

He usually begins with a big stretch then moves in closer and really digs in for some quick speed scratching. All I can say is, I’m glad it’s not my furniture or even worse, me!

Anyway, here is Dax in a rare sequence of pics as he scratches away ninja style. He doesn’t normally scratch for very long so it’s difficult to get pictures unless you right there waiting with the camera. Luckily this time we were. Enjoy!

The colder it gets outside the more our cats like to snuggle up and share body heat to keep warm. It’s a great way to get a good night sleep during the winter months without having to crawl under layers of blankets.

Remember the Friends episode where Joey started taking naps with Ross. Afterwards Joey said it was the best nap he ever had and kept sneaking more naps with Ross. Why? Bodyheat!

Anyway, the past few days have been extremely cold so Spooky and Dax have been snuggling up together to share some body heat. I’m certain they didn’t get the idea from Joey either.

Dax is a great sleeper. He loves to sleep the afternoon away just as most cats do.

One of his favorite spots to crash is at the bottom of the scratch post on the carpeted base.

One early afternoon Dax did just that. He walked over to the scratch post and plopped down on the comfy base. There’s only room on the base to fit his head so his body stretches out along the carpeted floor.

Once he’s there he’s out for a few hours. It’s his big snooze for the day.

As usual, it ended just as quickly as it had begun. It was yet another play-fight between Jasmine and Dax. Jasmine and Dax are always mixing it up with Jasmine being the one who get starts it.

I’m not sure what it’s all about or why it happens but every time Jasmine and Dax get together the paws start swinging.

Like this one time, Dax was sniffing a spot on the rug and Jasmine just had to see what it was. Then, out of nowhere, Jasmine gave Dax a shot. As it turns out, there was nothing there.

A few minutes later Jasmine gave Dax a nuzzle while he was relaxing on the carpet. Then boom! The paws are swinging again. Then, as if someone flipped a switch, it was over and Jasmine and Dax were hanging out together as if nothing had happened.

It’s too much fun to watch. I’ll have to get a video of it one of these days. Since there’s no hissing, puffy tails or arched backs I’m sure it’s all in good fun.

Most afternoons Dax takes his naps at the top of the stairs that leads into our bedroom. I guess you could say it’s one of his favorite spots to take a snooze.

Well, one day I decided to go up to get some pictures of Dax while he was napping in his favorite spot. As I was taking some photos, I got this neat sequence of him yawning just as he was waking up. I call it Dax’s Big Yawn. The look on his face in the last picture is just priceless.

Dax found him self behind bars the other day. Tried, convicted and locked-up with no chance of parole (ok, so I’ve been watching too much Law and Order).

Actually they were pseudo bars and merely a façade but bars non-the-less. Dax paced back and forth while poking his head through from time to time as if to say “You can’t pin that one on me copper, I didn’t do it, seee!.”

The bars didn’t faze him at all; and rightly so as they were our wooden banisters but if Dax was ever to be institutionalized (perish the thought) this might be how things may appear with a slightly more dingier setting.

Dax loves to play. He can not resist the opportunity to chase, stalk, pounce or swipe at anything that is waved in front of him. It’s in his blood. He is simply one of the most playful cats I have ever seen.

It’s like Paris Hilton and mindless hype, Led Zepplin and Reunion Concerts, Nintendo Wii and popularity, Dax and playing; you don’t get one without the other.

One evening I had my measuring tape out to size up a few things and as I rolled the tape back into the case it slid along the floor. Well Dax was all over it in seconds. Suddenly it was playtime!

That was fine with me. A measuring tape is as good as any other toy, so here is Dax getting his play ‘fix’ with the measuring tape.

Mental preparation is the main differentiator of a master player.
