Is your Cat a Couch-Potato?

Posted in Pictures of cats, Sleeping Cats on Oct 23 2007

I’m becoming slightly concerned about the band. They seem to be putting in a lot of couch time these days.

It’s not like the cats are on the couch all day with a remote in one paw and a brew in the other, but if I didn’t know any better I think they’re turning into couch potatoes. Is it a cat thing? A passing phase? Maybe so. Maybe they’ve always been couch potatoes and I haven’t noticed.

We have 2 big pretty comfy couches and there’s always a cat on one or both of them. Oh look there is Jade on the couch now. There’s Spooky on the other one!

They’re totally ignoring their cat bed, which has to be just as comfy. If I was a cat I’d sleep there. I guess nothing beats a big soft couch to snooze on.

Here they are in training for couch potatoes 101. I think some new daily activities are in order. Do they make cat treadmills?

  1. Lovely cats. Lucky you to have so many of them. I would love to have more than one but am too worried about introducing a new cat to my household-which would upset the incumbent. Did you get all of yours at once? How do they get on together?

    Hi Tabby,

Adding a new cat is not easy, but not impossible. It really depends on how you do it. Cats are territorial animals and new cats in their domain are seen as intruders. A gradual approach is usually best, byt it really depends on the social graces and personality of your current cat.

We never planned to have four cats; it just worked out that way. Spooky and Dax lived in one house and Jasmine and Jade lived in another.

They all came together when we moved into a new place. We figured if all the cats were in a new place they would all have to get used to it at the same time and there would be no territorial rights.

Before giving them access to the entire house we kept them in the basement and let them venture out from there. We spent lots of time with them to help with the transition. The basement was their starting point and it also kept them out of the way while we moved in our things.

They stayed in their carriers for a few days and it was a few weeks before they got used their new surroundings.

Spooky stayed in the bathtub for a while until he was familiar with the new house and the other cats. The other cats hid elsewhere. It was all very gradual.

After 6 years we had very few incidents and they get along very well. Spooky and Dax are closer to each other as are Jasmine and Jade although they are a very close knit group.

If you do get a new cat I would suggest keeping it separate from your other cat and introduce it gradually. It’ll take time but the sooner you do it the better especially if your cat has always been on its own.

  3. Hi!

We are the proud owners of our own band of four: Gilbert, Blanche, Daisy and Red. Daisy looks something like your Dax and Blanche looks like Jade? (the white one). Gilbey is all black with a Siamese howl and Red is a big, long-haired ginger fluffball! We love ‘em. I’ve got your blidget on my Poetikat’s Invisible Keepsakes poetry blog so I can check it out each day. Stop by and read some of my stuff - it’s entertaining, funny and rhymes. I write often about animals and cats feature frequently (look at oldest posts).

    Hi Kathleen,

Your cats sound fabulous. Good to hear from another owner of four cats! I like your poems too!

I think you meant to say Blanche looks like Spooky? Jade is our tortoise shell cat. Spooky is the big white cat.

Many thanks for adding our widget to your site.

  5. Yes. I thought it was Spooky, but wasn’t sure from the picture.
    Will be back…
