The Barn Cat Returns, with Rabbits.

Last weekend was our annual sleigh ride to see Santa. Surprisingly we ran into the same barn cat we met last year around the same time. Nice to see she was doing well. We still didn’t find out her name as it was too busy with all the visitors. Maybe we will next year. This year our feline friend had four to five rabbits to chase around. The rabbits seemed to be friendly and playful and certainly kept our barn cat well occupied. It was fun to watch and also the first time I had ever seen rabbits and cats playing together.

Great pictures! Well it looks like the furry little guy is well fed, love the marking on his nose.

Thanks. I agree the marking on his nose is great. He lives on a barn so I’m sure there is always lots of food around. It was nice to see him again.

A she!? I could never tell. How do you know that? Is it from the markings? Anyway, I’ve edited the text to the right sex. Thanks for letting me know.

This is an old post, but I thought I’d go ahead and tell you. Almost all calico and tortoiseshell cats are female. It has to do with genetics. In order to have two colors, other than white, you have to have two X chromosomes. Each X only carries one color. Since most cats are XX (female) or XY (male) only females can have the extra color.

Occasionally, around 1 in 1000 calico/tortoiseshell cats will be male. Those cats are genetic anomalies which have a sex configuration of XXY. They are male, but they’re almost always sterile.
