This is an old post, but I thought I'd go ahead and tell you. Almost all calico and tortoiseshell cats are female. It has to do with genetics. In order to have two colors, other than white, you have to have two X chromosomes. Each X only carries one color. Since most cats are XX (female) or XY (male) only females can have the extra color.

Occasionally, around 1 in 1000 calico/tortoiseshell cats will be male. Those cats are genetic anomalies which have a sex configuration of XXY. They are male, but they're almost always sterile.

A she!? I could never tell. How do you know that? Is it from the markings? Anyway, I've edited the text to the right sex. Thanks for letting me know.

Thanks. I agree the marking on his nose is great. He lives on a barn so I'm sure there is always lots of food around. It was nice to see him again.
