The Cat That Wanted Out is a children’s storybook that is beautifully printed on high quality semi-gloss paper and bound with a durable hard cover.
This is the story of Peaches, a cat that, as you can guess, wants out. As Peaches sees the things through his window his curiosity gets the better of him and he just has to get out to see what is really out there. The story is told from the viewpoint of Peaches as we follow along on his adventures both inside and outside.
The first thing in this book that caught my eye were the illustrations. A natural, unique, fresh style of drawing with rich colors that I think does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of the story and really makes it that much more of a fun book to read.
As an adult I can tell you about the story and what I like about this book, but it’s mainly subjective and I think the true test for a children’s story book is to put it in front of the audience it was created for. Luckily for me I have two kids who love books and they were all over this book the second it arrived. They also love Cats so a book about a Cat was very exciting for them.
Books at Bedtime
We read books just before bed and our 5 year old wanted to read The Cat That Wanted Out first. A new book is always fun and he was eager to start. He really enjoyed the book as we read through it and asked lots of questions. We have house Cats so his first question was “Why does the Cat want out?” As we continued reading he was very concerned about the cat’s safety during his outdoor adventures and was happy to see Peaches eventually get back inside without any problems.
He interacted a lot with this book and had many questions which means he was really getting into the story and learning a few things as well. He enjoyed the story and really like the pictures. He wanted to read the book for a few days in a row before moving on to other books. A week or so later he wanted to read it again. It became one of his favorite books.
Our older 7 year old also read The Cat That Wanted Out. He is at a higher reading level and was able to read by himself. It was a very easy read for him but he spent a lot of time looking at the illustrations in the book.
He also had lots of questions about the things Peaches was doing throughout the story. “Why is he knocking over the flowers” and “How high can Peaches jump?”. He really enjoyed the book as well and came back to it a few times to read again, liking the story more each time and enjoying the artwork.
Our Kids Loved It
This Cat Story book did very well with our kids. I would safely say that it would be a terrific book for any child who loves animals. It’s written for younger children 2 to 3 and older up to 5 or 6 but the illustrations would capture the interest of older children as well.
If you’re looking for a new book to read to your children I would highly recommend The Cat That Wanted Out. There illustrations are fabulous and quickly draw the child into the world of Peaches the Cat. The story does a fine job of keeping the reader’s attention and spurring the imagination as they follow Peaches on his journey to the outside world.
Back To School
It’s back to school next week and The Cat That Wanted Out will most likely find its way into a show and tell or, better yet, a reading time where the book can be enjoyed by an entire class of children.
Please let us know if you get a copy of The Cat That Wanted Out for yourself and be sure to let us know what you and your children thought about it in the comments.
